IVW20 Discovery2 ft Mount Forel, Mark Shepherd, Solpsiche, Off The Plot
Wed 23rd Nov 2016: Killatrix, Laura Riganti, Stephen Langstaff, Amy Lawton
Its our last showcase of 2016 ! We have Killatrix who mesh rock with electronica, the emotive soul vocals of Laura Riganti over the rhythmic patterns of electronic music. We welcome back to the Discovery stage Stephen Langstaff with his band, expect hook laden melodies and“spellbinding” vocals. Amy Lawton a fresh voice in the Country-Pop scene and of course our resident Dj Delphi.
Raised on Manga, metal and the undeniable influence of the Essex dance scene, Killatrix like to push the boundaries of rock, lacing it with electronica to create a hybrid, electro-dirt noise. Citing influences from the deep grunt of Nu Metal, the vocal genius of Gwen Stefani and old school electro, their sound is a combination of hard hitting beats, massive bass, fat guitars and gnarly synths, topped with powerful vocals.
They've supported reggae-metal outfit Sonic Boom Six, The Qemists on their 2015 tour, played Brownstock and V Festivals and gained support on BBC Introducing.
“one of the UK’s most exciting crossover prospects” - thesoundshark.com
“Killatrix are really starting to make a name for themselves, this awesome, high energy bunch blast out a great big chunk of exceptionally groovy rock with a twist and a shake, seriously dance inducing stuff!” - Jackson Cooper, Riviera FM
“a complete range of fascinating pop sounds from Japanese desire to Eastern promise” - Neil Mach
Laura is very much a product of being born in the early 1990s. From waking up to the sounds of Bob Marley or fellow Scot Paolo Nutini, a slice of Chance the Rapper to soundtrack the daily commute to going to bed with the warm thuds of Nicolas Jaar or minimal maestro Zip echoing through her ears, Laura’s music is a testament to the diversity of her tastes.
Seeing the soul seep from the rhythmical patterns of electronic music, a trait she attests a lot to the music of Larry Levan, means that the majority of her lyrics are conjured up while clubbing. Venues such as the Red Box in Ibiza’s legendary Space club and London’s own Village Underground have provided unlikely locations for many of Laura’s most productive writing sessions (preferably with a pen on a napkin though - her phone screen is often smashed due to, let’s say, an ‘over-enthusiasm’ for the music).
Some of her biggest shows to date (Secret Party Garden, Bulgaria’s Meadows in the Mountains, Rivington Street Festival and a 12,000-strong audience at Belgium’s RTBF 2013), as well as her most acclaimed track - a cover of Miguel Campbell’s Something Special / Baby I Got It that the DJ still closes his sets with 4 years on Whether walking into a spotlight or into a door, you’ll always see the same sides of Laura Riganti. Humility, humour and - of course - a belter of a voice that’ll perforate your head as much as your heart. No’ bad, aye?
"Laura has a voice that sends shivers down your spine and evokes such emotion that you'll be begging to hear more." Eva Lamont: Press at UK Music
Liverpool born Stephen Langstaff developed his unique songwriting in the UK and across the pond in America. He’s enjoyed support from BBC Introducing, 6 Music and Radio 2. He's headlined shows in Liverpool, supported Lightning Seeds, China Crisis, Echo & The Bunnymen and performed at SXSW.
"Langstaff blends emotive soulful pop with a natural stage presence….honey-soaked vocal with a range of stylistic hooks" - Getintothis
